Default z400 problem

alrighty, i just bought a 2006 z400 and here's the problem.

it runs poorly, everything is great until i get into the higher rpms then it feels like it's not getting enough fuel, it just loses power. i thought bad gas and when i was emptying the tank i used the petcock, on prime the gas was dribbling out, i thought it would be shooting out. i removed the petcock and i didn;t see any debris by the tubes.

i then removed the carb and i noticed some of the screws were stripped, like the previous owner was messing with it, i couldn't take off the float bowl because of a stripped screw and there's a brass screw? on the side of the carb that is chewed up, not sure if it's a screw but is has a slot that you would stick a screwdriver in. should i just toss the carb and buy a new one? i checked bikebandit and there's 4 different part numbers for the carb and not sure which one is right.

after getting the carb back together, it now will only run with the petcock in the prime position.

anyone have any ideas?

If someone messed with the carb that bad I'd probably replace it......It is a delicate piece of metal, they are pretty easy to ruin if you go around stripping screws and stuff like that.

I'm with ss97 on this. Replace it. If the outside looks that bad, there's no telling what they did to the inside.

You haven't said whether the quad is stock or not, and I'll assume that it is. The Edelbrock carb will be nice, but it's gonna want more air, so you're gonna want to get another filter besides stock paper. Then all that air is gonna want a better way out, so you're gonna want a better exhaust.

It's a vicious cycle. But a nice one.

ya, the engine is stock, that's why i bought it . i have no idea why the guy would mess around with the carb on a stock quad. i couldn't take it for a test ride before i bought because the guy lives across the street from a police station and they hate when you ride quads on the street.

i ordered the edelbrock last night and it should be here tomorrow and hopefully i'll put it on the quad on sunday. i read the directions on their site and it looks pretty easy to put on but i'm sure something will go wrong. i'll let you guys know how the installation goes and i'll try to take pictures. the exhaust and filter will probably come next month.

i put the edelbrock in yesterday. the biggest pain in the *** was removing the brace between the frame rails, they give you a new one. i couldn't figure out how to get a wrench on the nut for the bolt that goes through the engine case. it probably would have been easier if i had a helper but i finally got it off.

putting the new carb and cable in was a piece of cake, everything fit perfectly. there were 3 hoses coming out of the carb, i have no idea what they were for, i'm going to call edelbrock today to find out.

i started it up and it still ran like crap except now it ran poorly in the low rpms and better in the higher rpms. i pulled the plug and it was black as night, i figured it was running rich . the carb has an adjuster on top to change the needle height but i couldn't get it to engage the needle so i took it off and turned it 2 turns to the left to lean it out and i also removed my airbox lid and changed the plug. then wow, the thing took off like a *****. i pulled the plug again and it was nice and tan . it's running real good now.

i just ordered a k and n power lid and a pro-flow airbox filter kit from dennis kirk. i really didn't want to run without an airbox lid. hopefully, i won't have to adjust the mixture again.

i'm going out to pennsylvania on saturday and i really hope it runs just as good in the woods as it does on the street.

next up is a new exhaust system, i want a full system that isn't obnoxiously loud but delivers great performance. any suggestions.
