Default Carb help with a 86 LT250r

I picked up a 86 lt250 quadracer about a month ago.

I had the top end re-done.

it runs great, it sounds great.

BUT, its sluggish at low RPMs.

The carb does not seem right on it.

the only way it starts and runs thru the day is with the choke on the down setting.

I believe when the lever is down the choke is on. ?

when the choke is lever is up, I have to give tons of gas to stay running.

I need to fix this, I might just get a new carb.

what do you think?

where is a good place to get a crab? and what kind?

Thanks.

hey welcome to the forum!

do you have the original carb (32mm round slide) or a later model lt250r carb (34mm flat slide, its a common upgrade)?

It must be the original.

whats a good name brand carb?

should I stay with the stock MM size of 32?

EDIT:

I really think my problems will go away with a new carb.

Default carb and jet size

On my 86 the choke is on in the up position, and off down. I have a 34mm mikuni. If the bike runs good, might not need to do anything, but if it doesn't

First start out and find out which carb it is. You will probably not need a new carb, just new jets.

1. You should take the carb off, and find out what jets you have. If you are not familiar with carbs, you can download a manual, our buy one, believe me they are simple, sound complex, but if you have even a little mechanical ability it is very easy.

2. Get all factory new jets, genuine mikuni, nothing else, no matter what anyone tells you.

3. Clean it, put it back together.

The first picture is a picture of my flat slide 34mm mikuni, second is stock jetting sizes.

Great info man!.

Thanks a lot.

The bike runs great at higher RPMs.

its sluggish at low RPMs in 1st and 2nd gear.

It goes thru 2 plug each ride also.

but when the power ban kicks in, its perfect.

I'll look into the jets.

If your going through 2 plugs every ride, your either way to rich or lean.

Read this, might help you, it is not on a specific bike, but lets you know where to start looking.
