Z400 Top End Rebuild Recommendations
#1
Today I did a compression test on my motor and came up with NO COMPRESSION :/... so me and my buddies at the dealer started to tear down the motor. We found that the piston rings were stuck and that one of the exhaust valves was worn a bit and leaking. So now I'm doing a complete top end rebuild and am asking for some recommendations. The cylinder was in superb shape. But I do have to replace the piston bc it has a knick in it on the bottom from where someone dropped it or tried to turn it over without the cylinder...
but anyways glad Ive found the problems and ready to start the build. Thanks in advance!

You may as well just get a big bore kit. They can be had for $400. Get rid of all the stock valves and springs and upgrade to Kibblewhite or Ferrera valves and get DRZe valve springs. Single layer base gasket to improve compression. Port and polish head, cams, etc, etc...........how much do you want to spend is the big question.

well didnt wanna spend a whole lot... i bought the quad for 400 and was trying to keep it a low budget to atleast get it ride ready. So for right now OEM stuff but if upgrades are close to same orice ill go ahead and do it. Is this good?

I'm just going to go with Rocky Mountain ATV and buy everything from them. The dearler told me $360 for everything and I can get from Rocky Mountain for $330. But I'm also gonna include the valve spring kit which the dealer didnt price. so it's $460. I think I'm doing pretty good on this investment.
$400 for quad
$50 for seat
$100 for a crankcase cover
$62 for compresion check and diagnosis
$25 for repair manual
and now soon to be $460 for top end build.
and then another $400 in a few weeks or so for wheels, tires, subframe, radiator , radiator fan, side gas tank plastics, and tailight
and then some carb cleaning and stuff like that so ill add in $50.
so that will put me under $1600.. You think it's a good deal? I kinda do and I know I'll appreciate it ALOT more than if someone else was paying for it all.

you may want to get a drz base gasket when you put it back together. They are single layer as opposed to 3 layer and will raise the compression.
Go here:
Advantage Cycle LC - Indianola, Iowa
They sell a pretty good Z top end kit at a good price. I would recommend doing it.

from what I understand they are not a bad piston.
