by the beach I assume you mean Pismo. We've had our 250 there with paddles and it did fine. It easily went up any hill there.
I think you got something else going on unless you got some insanely heavy paddles or something............
It should have done better with paddles. They don't do well in the sand without them. I've got 6 paddle gliders on ours.

I believe they are 20-10-8's on DWT .125 wheels. It is a VERY light set-up with the gliders.
I have ridden that thing myself (following the kids on the 400's) through some pretty big stuff at Glamis and it does OK. The main thing I find lacking is straight up hill-climbing. It does good on dirt but not so much in the sand. Powerband and gearing just aren't right for that. My wife (aout 130) rode it now my son (about 100#s) rides it now. Pisses him off that he cant go up some of the hills his buddies do on their raptor 250's but he can go anywhere in the dunes.
Buy the kid a Z400.
