LT230S magneto side cover
#1
Okay so heres whats goin on. Im in the middle of developing a new mag side cover for the LT230S. Everyone who owns one has at one time or another busted theirs and these puppies cost 200 bucks from suzuki. Im designing one that is considerably my beefy and casting them myself for quality and great fitment. Plus another upside is im casting them out of aluminum alloy so they can be repaired at any metal fab or machine shop a lot cheaper than purchasing new ones. Just thought id give you guys the heads up and see what you thought. Ill probably sell them for around 150 with gaskets and seals for the shifter and plan on producing 2 or 3 a week so i can really keep an eye on quality.

the side cover pattern is coming along pretty good. i should have the pattern completely finished tomorrow to cast off of. Ill put some pics on here so you guys can see the progress when its ready. ive contacted several foundries in the area to get quotes on the casting prices and machining prices. if they are too high ill have to cut some costs by just putting in the time in my shop

oh yeah ill field test the first piece extensively and fit and insure every piece works one piece at a time to make sure of being a good part. im also thinking of making a timing advanced piece since the 230 timing is stationary

Adjustable timing? Now there is something id never thought of. Sounds cool.

Wow, that's awesome Newport. Would love to see what you come up with. Great idea on the adjustable timing. I might be on your customer list.
As an extra thought, ever thought of casting them with a hole to accept a starter motor? That's what Goki used to do. You could cast it to accept a common starter motor such as the one on the LT230E. Only thing is you'd have to get a flywheel similar to the ones Goki had that had a starter ring on them. Maybe a little far fetched, but just thought I'd throw that out there.
Also, one other cheap trick you might consider is to cut and thread a hole in the top so you can put a shallow length but large diameter bolt in that you can take out to see the timing marks on the flywheel without having to drain the oil and remove the entire side cover just to see your timing marks. The 230E has this and it's a life saver! Check out a micro fische on that machine to see what I'm talking about.
