Default LTZ250 freewheeling down hills

Hi,
I bought a 2004 LTZ250 and noticed if going down a hill at a slower speed the coupling between the engine and driveline is lost and it freewheels/coasts. There is no engine braking. This doesn't seem right to me but I am new to Suzukis. I did replace the one way clutch in the centrifugal with a used one from ebay but it behaves the same, if not worse. Is this normal for this quad?

Thanks

try going down a hill and when it starts free wheeling hit a gas and then let go of it and see if it engages the one way bearing

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. That's precisely what happens...if I peg the throttle when it's freewheeling, the engine will re-engage the driveline. Is this normal for this bike? I'm used to the engine always being coupled to the driveline on the Hondas I've owned.

Thanks!

You said you have already replaced the one bearing, i would inspect clutch drum for wear. did you use OEM part? i have installed several aftermarket ones that wouldn,t hold good. they grab and let go...

The i.d. of the clutch where the shoes contact looked good to me. I replaced it with a used Suzuki one way clutch from ebay that supposedly "worked". It looked good and seemed to work when out of the bike when I played with it by hand.

I take it it isn't normal behavior for the bike to begin freewheeling like I described. I still haven't received a straight answer to this question. Do you know if it is normal?

The LTZ250 has what they call a "Wet Clutch" along with the shaft drive that shifts by engine RPM, Any "Free Wheeling" ie..clutch engaging to take the quad out of gear while going down a hill is bad news. The last thing you want to do going downhill when you want to slow down is be forced to "goose" the gas "go faster" to keep the gears engaged. The wife is on the LTZ250 Quad Sport and if yours is free wheeling down a hill while you have it in gear I would say that is real bad Ju Ju and I would quit riding that quad before someone gets hurt on it. If it were me I would spend the money take it to a Suzuki repair shop and have it fixed the right way straight away.

BTW I would never trust my life or anyone elses life for that matter to a Used Ebay part.

Parting thought..

Did you put in enough oil when you changed out the parts? did you put in the proper oil? and or checked the fluid "Oil" level lately to make sure you actually have enough fluid to keep the "Wet Clutch" working properly.

Good luck

my wifes 250ex did that for like 2 years and her clutch slipped when i rode it hard in the upper gears but it didnt effect her mild riding at all. and she always used her brakes going down hills instead of only engine breaking. if you ride it mild and use your brakes youll probably be ok but if you ride aggressive at all i would definately fix it or get a quad for more aggressive riding like a z400 or one with a manual clutch

I still say a bike popping out of gear when your going down a hill is real bad news and its a roll over waiting to happen when you eventually lock the brakes and start sliding sideways down that hill.
