alright so i did a compression and leakdown test just now. the compression test showed that i have about 110 psi of compression and the leakdown test showed that i am at about 54% leakage. so for an 85 lt230ge what do those results yield? do i need to tear down the motor? or is my starting problem probably still in the carb?

well im not sure where it was leaking at but i just tore the whole top end down and the piston looks like its in bad shape and the valves dont look to healthy either so tomorrow i am ordering new valves and a piston/ring/gasket set for the whole top end. im just gonna send the cylinder to work with my dad and have him rebore it for me and order all the parts i need to rebuild online. if i do it right i can get everything i need for a top end rebuild for about 120. so hopefully after i get it all back together it should run like a champ. also you think it would be wise to change the cam chain while im at it? i doubt this thing has been rebuilt in its 25 year lifetime so idk if i should replace the cam chain too? heres some pics i took erlier before i had everything completely apart.

valves springs were pretty stiff and the guides looked ok. i accidentally tore an oil seal when pulliing the valves out so i gotta replace that but no problem there. i just gotta find a cheap flywheel puller so i can get to the chain in the bottom end. the chain guide looked pretty good but a little scuffed up. same for the chain tension er guide. i also have a few studs im going to replace because they are so rusted and weak form 25 years of wear that i snapped one and haven't gotten it out of the top end yet lo..

well i ran into a problem today. i took the piston off and the flywheel to try and prep everything for reassembly next week. when i took the piston off this is what i found

it appears that the damn thing broke off somehow and i found a few pieces floating around the crank and was able to pick em out. my question is do i need to split the case now to remove all foreign debris that is most likely floating around in there?

also when i pulled the flywheel off my timing chain was bunched up at the bottom of the case and i think it jammed against some guide looking thing thats aprt of the case and it shaved it off a little bit

is it gonna be ok if i file it down and make it smooth or did i **** up my case real bad now?

that spot were the chain rubbed looks like where the chain guide go's but i would not worry about that. I would be more conserned what happend to the piston what it hit and why.

well i split the crankcase and found the chunkcs of piston in the bottom so thats all clean, i have a feeling the piston was so weak since it was the origional piston from when the bike came off the assembly line in 85 and i just helped it break the rest of the way lol, anyways after i split the case i tried getting the tranny into neutral since it wasnt spinning freely, is there anyway to tell where is neutral on the tranny cam? cause i took the tranny cam and forks out of the case and now im not sure where neutral is on the cam lol.
