I also have never ridden one of these before. I was suprised how hard it is to steer when your on the throttle pretty good without putting a little weight foward.

Yeah, these are very light in the nose. Good tires will help some. Heres my 230e that I rescued and traded off. My sticker had a 87 build date

Mine is the exact same color. Red with a blue seat and a black nose piece. Mine has the rack on the back though. I love what you did with the wheels. I might have to do that, mine are a little spotted with rust.

And about the model year, the title says it's an 88 and all I can find is specs and parts for an 89 or newer too which is kinda wierd.
can you go look at the quad now? if so, look at the VIN sticker on the pull starter side. it should be a black and silver sticker with numbers stamped in it. it should have a date stamped in it. it should look like this: 12/88 or something like that, either way 88 will be on the other side of the / mark.

there is a starter relay on ebay right now for $10

I found the tag in the back with all of the specs on it(weight, model, tire size etc) but I don't think it's the right one. It doesn't have a build date or a vin on it. Where exactly is it at?

it should be on the pullstart side, front frame rail by the header. the vertical one in front of the engine.

Found it, 8/87 build date, so it is an 88 for sure. I also saw the relay on ebay you're talking about but with shipping it looks like I can get a brand new no name one for $2 more. It looks like it probably is the relay for sure because the battery has power after running it for a while. My headlight and taillight will turn on when it's off but when I hit the starter button I get nothing. Not even a click. Also the indicator lights on the key box for neutral and reverse don't light up at all. Any idea what might cause this. I'd really like to have them working. Thanks

well i wouldnt use anything but OEM for the electronics. Other companies may not have the same resistance or tolerance and may wipe out the remaining electronics, including your coils.

I did go ahead and order one from ebay that was an old factory one for only 16 bucks shipped. Lets hope thats the problem. I cleaned the carb yesterday and adjusted the idle and it runs like new now. Do you have any idea where to start to find the reason why those indicator lights don't work? I checked the bulbs and connections at the box already and all is good there. That neutral and reverse light would be nice to have.
