Default 91 King Quad help needed

I bought a 91 King Quad two days ago. It has a sound like timing chain slap, or maybe it needs a valve adjustment, except there is no sight window for the timing marks. I pull the starter rope until it blows my finger off of the cylinder, but not matter which compression stroke it is on, the exhaust valve seems tight on either one. (I didn't try the intake valve) Where are the timing marks on this quad, and if both valves are always tight, do I have to take the cylinder head cover off to align the camshaft sprocket marks to adjust the valves?

I really need the float valve adjustment specifications, too, as in height, and where to measure from and to, because the floats don't really have a flat part to them.

The timing marks are on the cam and should be parallel to the head, which can only be seen once the valve cover is removed. This isn't important to set the valves though. Just use a screwdriver thru the spark plug hole to find TDC on the compression stroke and set the valves. If the valves are tight, they are worn and need replaced. Once the hardness is worn off, they wear quickly even more. I've never seen a tight exhaust valve though. Makes me think something else is up.

The chain slap is very possible. I've seen a few of these engines stretch the chain farther than the tensioner can go. I've welded nuts on the ends of the tensioners to get more time out of them.

No clue about the floats.
