Hey all, new to the site. I have a couple of questions about my quadsport. When I bought it, the guy told me it didn't run. After I drained the water out of the carb, cleaned it out and put some fresh gas in it, I was able to get it to start but it will not idle and it smokes alot. It will stay running if I keep revving it. I tried adjusting the carb but it didn't help much. I'm not sure if the smoke is because the engine needs to be rebuilt, or if it's just because it's not running right. I don't have much info on it other than it's a 230 quadsport with quadrunner plastics.
Someone also just gave me a 250r quadracer that needs even more work but it's all there. If I can't get it rideable, can I use it as a parts quad or are they too different?

Not much will swap from a 'Racer to a 'Sport. Completely different engines and suspension. It is quite common for machines of this vintage to need a valve adjustment and/or rebuild. If the valves are out of adjustment, fixing that should help the starting issues. I would make sure the filter has been serviced, throw a new plug in it, check the valves, and start it again. A compression test will help sort out if the engine needs rebuilding without opening it up as well.

 

thanks Scooter. I don't have a manual for it yet, but I do have a compression tester. Can you give me an idea of what the compression should be?
