Default 89 LT250R won't downshift

Hi.

I have an 89 LT250R that I've been toying around with. I've slowly been rebuilding this beast (without digging in to the motor) since last winter. Today, I was out at a friend's field with it to stretch her legs finally, and I noticed that it wouldn't downshift... at all. It runs through each of the gears just fine, but it won't downshift for whatever reason. I press on the shifter and nothing. It goes down, doesn't click or feel like it did anything, and then returns to its natural position. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

BUMP...

I failed to mention that it won't downshift at all with the engine running. I have to stop it and go through the gears back down to neutral.

Have you tried downshifting with engine running without pulling in the clutch? In anycase, pull the cover off and inspect, seems like it would be something fairly obvious causing this.
