I'm looking at an '89 LT250r that I can get for $1000. It has a **** on the motor that the guy says is an adjustable power band. Anyone know what the heck it is?

The bike is in fairly good shape and runs well. The only mods I know of are a twist throttle (gotta go) and DG pipe. It should be worth $1000. Any problems with the '89 model that I need to know of?

 

The "****" that you mentioned is the adjuster cap for the exhaust/power valve. It puts tension on the return spring of the valve and the amount of tension determines when the valve will be accuated. It is to be set at 1 turn counter-clockwise stock. I recall seeing the RPMs where the valve opens for the different year LT's, but I can't remember what site it was on.
As for the quad itself, just look it over really well as you would any other quad. Check for play in all the bearings(swingarm,axle,a-arm,wheel,suspension, etc..), and check for cracks in the frame. Mine had a little crack under the left footpeg but other than that it has had no others. I've heard of cracking above the front shock mounts, but I've never seen it on an 87+ model, though I'm sure it has happened to someone. Overall, my 88 has been as, or more reliable than my brother's 87 250R and it always runs better too.
