Default quad hard to start

Hello, i have a quad runner 500 4x4 not to sure what year maybe 2000. the quad didnt want to start a first because it sat for a really long, so i tuned it and it started took a while, i have to turn the needle at the bottum of the quad next to the bool. well it started then i went riding and sometimes it would rev. high in neutral and would be hard to switch from like 3 gear to a higher gear. I thought that was because of the rpm maybe it was getting to much gas so i tryed tuning it again from the buttom and now it wont start. I was wondering how much is that needle suppose to be out at the bottom of the carb? i think it was like half way out not to sure. Also any tips on tuning? and would because of the high rpm it would be hard to switch gears?

Pull the carb, give it a thorough cleaning and install a Shindy carb kit. these kits can be purchased from ebay for not much money. If the carb cleaning/set up feels like it might be a bit much for your expereince level, then I recommend you find a good ATV shop to do the job.
