New King Quad Question
#1
I got a 2001 King Quad last weekend. It's primarily for my son to ride, but I think it's pretty fun too.
Well, this weekend, we went riding. I love this little quad. It does exactly what I bought it for. I feel like I couldn't have made a better pick for my kids to ride. Except......
I'm sure it's not a MAJOR problem, but here it is......the thing ran fine all day, until I tried to climb a very small, pretty steep hill. It was muddy, so I was using diff lock. I would get almost to the top, and the thing dies. I roll back down, restart, and try agian. Same thing. Dies. The only way it would restart was to hold the throttle all the way open, then it would act like it was flooded. I tried that hill 6 times and made it once.
Well today we cleaned 'em up, and I found about 2 tablespoons of gasoline in the breather box drain tube.
I don't really want to take it to the dealership. They wont be able to duplicate the problem, and charge me for looking at it.
Anybody have any thoughts or suggestions ?
Thanks, Dave

I believe srx6 is correct. It's a pretty simple change but you may still want to have the dealer do it if your not comfortable doing it. Call them first and describe the problem to them.
This sound like a classic case, the fuel level in the bowl is to high and when you proceed up a steep hill the fuel spills from the bowl into the throat and back to the air box. The fix would be to bend the float toward the bottom of the bowl. Bending is the only way to adjust the float. The big problem is getting to the carb.
Good Luck,
Rob

That was what I suspected too. That's about all it could be.
I don't really feal like messing with it, but would probably be less hassle than taking it in, and being without it for as long as they want me to be.
Has anybody had one of these carbs apart ? Is it a re-usabale gasket ? O-ring ? Or do I need to get parts before I dig in ?
I was planning to do the "diff lock in any range mod" this weekend, so that would be as good a time as any I guess.
Thanks for your help.

Dave,
I would go into it not buying any seals or gaskets. On a new quad you shouldn't have any problems with the gaskets. Just take it apart carefully. If you do mess one up...well you gave it a good try, no harm done. Your biggest problem might be loosing something. Be sure to place a towel or piece of carpet under the quad when your working on it. If something drops the cloth will keep it from bouncing everywhere. I'll even put down a small shop towel under the card but on top of the engine in case I drop something. There are a lot of nooks and crannys that a 6mm nut can find. Any when you disassemble the carb, do it on a nice flat big surface with some towels down. The float pin, seat and sometimes a spring can easially float away.
Making the diff lock change at the same time is smart, you'll already have the quad apart. Be sure to refer to the web site for tricks and pictures. http://www.angelfire.com/tx4/kingquad

Thanks Rob.
This ain't my first rodeo, but I do appreciate you'r tips.
I actually did the diff lock mod yesterday afternoon. Only took about an hour. Can't believe how much easier it shifts.
I'll probably dig into the carb tonight. I expect for that to be a cork gasket, and shouldn't be compressed TOO much.
Thanks again.

Sorry Rob, been out of town for a couple of days.
I did the diff lock mod, Monday night, and looked at the carb Tuesday night. I didn't have any specs to go by, so I just tweaked the float for a little less fuel. Haven't got to try it out yet other than around the block, but seems to be okay.
I didn't want to take the intake off of the head, but found that that was the only way to get it back on. So next time, it'll be easier.
No real problems worhth mentioning. I'll find out when I try to climb that damned hill again.
I went to the dealership and explained it to them, and they thought maybe the plug was failing at high RPM. Guess it's possible. They gave me a plug, so, we'll see.
Thanks for all your help.

robnhouston, has some good ideas of what could be causing your problem. But there is another scenario. If you have a dirty air filter, your QK will drink gas like there's no tomorrow. That alone will cause you not to make a hill, deep mud or in general, engine to have poor performance. The gas will, on incline tend to go to the airbox. Hopefully, one of these ideas will help before you have to go to the dealer...
