A friend of mine wants to get a dirtbike and I may have found one but I don't think the year he told me is right.Supposedly it's an '86 RM 80,but it is air cooled and I believe it has a black seat.I havent seen it yet and don't know if we will bother if it is a total antique. He wants $500.00 for it and also said it has a mono shock.Any ideas?? Thanks,Jim

Default RM dirtbike question

it might be that old. i have an rm 80 2001 and it is liquid cooled. and the color of the seat i dont think matters cuz you could get a different seat cover. i've seen older rm 80s (like 95 i think) and it was liquid cooled. i dont know if this helps but i tried.

Default RM dirtbike question

1986 suzuki rm 80's were liquid cooled. monoshocks for the big four (yamaha, honda, kawasaki, suzuki),came in the early eighties.suzuki made a bike called a ds80 im pretty sure, and it was air cooled.and i think the very ealry rm 80's,like 81'-82' were air cooled, but im not sure. honestly, for about 7-8 hundred you could get an early nineties rm80 or maybe even a mid nineties rm 80. keep in mind, people by old lt250's and 500's because they dont make them anymore, other wise people would want new lt250's and 500's. that means they are probably going to require a ton of more work than a 04' quad. i would suggest saving a couple hundred more and going with a newer one, because if its air cooled, its not an 86 rm80 anyways. remember, the newer you go,as long as you buy a good bike, the less problems you are likely to have with rm's ------or your friend i should say

I would get a newer, powervalved rm or kx 80/85. The rm and kx bikes have the best engines. My stock rm takes my friends piped yz(same year both 85s).

Also, your friend may want a big wheel model. They probably feel underpowered, but would be better for rugged, rutted out surfaces.

by big wheel you mean the rm85l and the kx 100 right???
cuz my friend has a kx 80 and 100 and i've ridden them both and the 100 didn't seem too much better. a little bigger and a little faster but not by much
