86' Q-Racer- should I buy it?
#1
I have the chance to buy an 86 Q-Racer 250 for $1100. It's one of my dad's friends so I might get it for less. What kind of problems did these models have and what kind of mods can I get for it? I'm going to see it tomorrow. Should I get it if it's in good shape?

I just picked up an '86 for $500 last weekend. If you take a look at my post titled "can this be welded" you'll see what the major flaw in the quad was. The swingarm seems to be a weak spot as are the front shocks them selves. At the top of them near the eyelet where the mounting hardware passes through has broken on quite a few. Most people run the Works shocks anyways so that one isnt to big of a deal. Other than the swingarm the quad was in pretty good shape, the transmission needed a primary drive gear, water pump driven gear, and a balancer. I'm picking up all 3 for $50 online. The plastic isnt in to good of shape and it needs new tires but those were things I was expecting. The top end also needs done but I expected that too. It still had the original piston in it which is nice, it has a few lives left still.
If its in good shape jump on it, that seems like a fair price if its in good shape.

If it is in good shape it is worth $1,100 easy, I sold my old quadsport 230 for $1,200. Check the swingarm bearings and a-arm bearings, as they can add up to a couple hundred dollars if they are bad. I'm not saying don't buy it if they are bad, but it might help you negotiate the price.
