Me and my buddy are thinking of painting our plastic. We are not changing colors just trying to fix hte faded look. I tried it today on a Cr fender. It looked pretty good. I just put a thin coat on it and I flexed the plastic it stayed on. Has anyone done this and any good types ????

 

I assume you mean 'spray bombing'...


When I bought my quad it had a coat of grey primer and yellow on top of faded scratched and cracked plastic... it had runs and drips that really sucked. The paint job was really poor and chipped pretty easy... I had to sand it all off.


but yet I think I might spray bomb it again... it's cheap and looks good if you do it right... probably... lol

 

The other day I was telling my friend about how I was gonna buy black fenders for my 'Zilla, and he said that over there to "Carquest" they have a new paint out designed for painting plastic. I really didn't ask about it cuz he made it sound like he invented the stuff and I want NEW fenders anyway, but maybe you could find some of that paint at your local Auto Parts store.....Oh, I also remember reading in Dirtwheels many years back that painting plastic is like painting a bar of soap. You need to scuff the plastic good and apply thin coats at a time and let it dry completely before another coat of paint is laid down or it'll run wicked easy....hope I helped....Latah....

 

My dad tried to paint the old plastic on my 86 today, he's a pretty damn good painter so I got him to paint it (I suck at painting) and he had trouble keeping it from dripping. The plastic was pretty smooth and he tried two kinds of paint (one for each fender). It didn't work good at all and I'm reconsidering spraying the plastic on my quad now... We at least need to find a thicker paint before I re-consider.


I think I'll just send it to my local body shop.

 

Hey, try this-just dust over the fenders so it looks like you got overspray on them( you know, just a bunch of specks), and keep doin' that till you get a good layer of primer for the paint to adhere to......

 

first scuff sand it with 400 grit then spray acoat of flexible primer. let then spray your color. make sure the color has flex additive also. rob

 

I have never tried it, but there is a specialized vinyl spray paint at the Home improvement store that I work at. It is only in light colors: White & tan. But it is designed to stick to vinyl (plastic) windows. Maybe where you live they supply other colors.

No regular paint, like rustoleum, or krypton, etc. will stick to plastic. Part of the reason plastic is used in so many products, including quads and windows, is that nothing sticks to it, and it is easy to clean. So you have to use special paint.

I would see if you could contact Quad Central, and see if they have any suggestions. They have awsome custom painted quads!

you need to use an automotive paint system to be succesful. there are special primers and paints to make it adhere. the stuff they sell at the hardware stores just wont work. i refinish cars and motorcycles all the time so you need to use a quality product.hope this helps you. rob
