Quadzilla Oil Mix & type
#11
<< Mine's bored 50 over and was told by the guy I bought it off of to run 40:1. It really seems to smoke though. I also see a lot of oil splatter coming from the exhaust joints. I'm pretty new to 2 strokes and was wondering if this is relatively normal. Other than that it runs great though. >>
What oil are you using?

I wanted to baby the old monster a bit so I put Bel Ray full syn. superbike oil in the trany. 3 weeks later I noticed some oil on the floor under the old beast, so I changed the seal around the sprocket. The oil kept comming. So I changed the seal around the gear shifter. The oil kept comming from the sprocket seal again. By this time I'm starting to get a bit p/o!!! THEN I noticed it started to smoke. I mean smoke bad I kept adding oil. It kept dripping and burning it. I spoke with some hydraulic specialist I work with (listen carefully now) he said that synthetic oil will soften up seal that are not made for syn. oil. The seals on my 500
absorbed up the oil and then went for a s--t. Even the bastard seal behind the primary gear which let the oil be sucked into the engine Warn your friends and every one you know with quads. DO NOT PUT SYNTHETIC OIL IN YOUR TRANY. My local suzuki dealer noticed that I was buying a lot of seals and asked me if I had put syn. oil in there. He said, I'm lucky it didn't screw up my clutch plates nuf said

I had just rebuilt this quad, new seal, bearings, you name it. Rebuilt from the ground up. Newer machines (cars, trucks, quads, bikes etc) are now made for synthetics but older machines are not. Even if the seals are new, they are still made to 1987 standards. Softening seals was confirmed to me directly from the manufacturer. If you don't believe me go to www.belray.com yourself and into tech. questions.
I replied to your question to try to save you some nasty headaches but no matter how many times you tell a kid that fire burns, you can bet that he's gonna try it for himself!!

I don't deny that amsoil might be better, I'm just saying that my experience with Bel Ray has turned me off synthetics. Before ripping the engine apart to change all those seals I wanted to confirm that the oil was the problem, so I took a spare seal that I had and put it in a jar with this oil for a few days. After about a week the lip on the seal became soft and looked like a cutain on your window. It had ripples just like and acordion. I since changed all seals and put in conventional oil and not a drop leaked since. I'm not a pencil pucher either, I've been a machinist working for a hydraulic co. for 16 yrs. They're the ones that turned me on to the idea that synthetics are not made for every machine.
