While at Yoshimura racing today I had a chance to get a good look at the new Quadracer 400 as they were building a new exhaust for it. They also have a stroker kit which will be available later this year based on the same kit that is used by the Suzuki factory race team and produces 50 horsepower and is 430cc. This quad with the stroker kit installed is VERY VERY fast! They were making passes down the street and it was impressive to say the least. I really like my Bombardier DS650 Baja but if I were a smaller guy there would be a Suzuki in my garage as soon as it is available.

well they(yoshi) are professional engine performance builders, engineers trained to milk the most out of something they can...
on the realistsic side, the stock Z400 motor will probly be about 32-35 Hp. highly modified, and well tuned race built Z400's will probly put out 50-55Hp, depending on how reliable you want it to be. some nuts out there that dare to try really crazy stuff may even get 60+ Hp... but time will tell.

On the DRZ dirt bike, 38-40hp is stock(atv will likly be lower) With a pipe, 3*3" hole in the snorkel, and 165mj(stock is 142 I think) will push close to 45hp. It will hang with a yz426 in a drag race.(not beat) I drove a stock DRZ400, and WOW! I didn't think it would have that much power. It totally flies, I scared myself a few times . I am comparing it to my modified 400ex by the way. It would kill my 400ex, i'm sure. It would likly beat a piped banshee. I can't wait to try out the quad version. Remember though that the bike is 280lbs wet, and the quad will be 400lbs wet. The bike also has much less resistance with 2 hard skinny tires vs and quads 4 wide tires with more resistance.

Last year in dirtrider magazine, it was shortly after the drz400 was released, they tested 2 machines that were modded by thumper racing. the first had a big bore 436cc kit installed, along with head porting, yoshimura cams and high-rev ignition module, yoshimura titanium race exhaust, k@n filter, and jetting and airbox mod. with these modifications they said that it was much faster than a wr426 through the gncc course that they were doing the testing on. The second machine had all of the above mods except it had a big bore 470cc kit installed. The magazine testers said that it was a tourqe monster and that it could run with a KTM 520e/xc. I feel that this will be an awesome quad when suzuki finally releases it, only a few more months I think that the drz400 motor is a much better motor than the yz/wr426; the 426 might be faster in stock form, but it is a very hard motor to coax more power out of and it does not respond well to internal mods, while the suzuki motor can be bored out to a 470 and responds very well to mods. I just hope that suzuki gets the handeling right on their new quad.

something else, the power and torque carve are linear on the DRZ, compared to a 426, making it easier to drive faster for longer. I wish there were more `torque figures out on machines. that tells us just as much as hp. I would rather have a torque monster, than a horsepower screamer. better for woods riding, and you feel the raw power and grunt more. the DRZ is both hp and torque happy.
I hope the quad isn't as choked off as much as the dirt bike though. It will be easy to get more power out of it if it is though. I better start saving my money, I can see a DRZ quad in the garage soon! or after college.
