LT500 - Noisy Son of a Gun
#1
Ok, I brought my "new" LT500 into a local shop today, and the guy started it up. He said (without pulling out his dB meter) that I was probably in the 105 dB range (I think he was overexaggerating a bit, but it is ridiculously loud.)
He suggested using a high temp sealant at the pipe where it connects to the exhaust port (he and I think it has a leak), and to install a clamp where the front and rear pipe intersect (just below the seat, left side, where another leak is evident). Also, he suggested an FMF Turbine Core 2, saying that it should lower the noise level greatly. I need to get down to 93 dB, and the FMF Turbine Core 2 is rated at 96 dB. Will a turn down tip help with that last 3 dB?
What are you guys running for silencers? I need some recommendations. I know engine mods play into the noise level, but generally speaking, what is the best silencer that will minimize power loss, while still quieting this thing down to an acceptable growl?
Thanks!

I gotta PT pipe and a Fat Boy silencer, but my quads not together yet, but I bet it'll sound mean I think I read the "quiet" Fat Boy silencer has a thicker end cap with the turndown tip, so yeah, a turn down would make it a wee bit quieter, or at least make you think its quieter cuz the sound is directed down and away from you........Latah.......

Hey Spazard, you need to head over to Cascade Innovations, they sell a silencer that meets they stupid Oregon DB levels. I think it's called "CSFX" or something like that. LRD might have something but I am not sure.

I thought my Pipe was stock when i bought the machine but ive since found out that it might be a Proline or something... (Anyone know?) anyway, its mighty mighty loud but luckily we dont have any stupid noise restrictions over here. You just get more looks hehe. I know for a fact that the silencer needs to be repacked. Does this help with noise reduction?

AussieZilla if your silencer is really bad, repacking it will reduce noise and give it a very small amount of more power, or at least on my neigbors's LT250 it did. Also, I just use insulation to repack mine. If your silencer has rivots, I recommend you pop them now, repack if it's bad, and use bolts in place of rivots with some loc-tite.

AussieZilla, you have got an aftermarket pipe. The stocker is way uglier than that. A plain Jane rectangular steel jobbie is what was stock on one. I have an a FMF silencer on mine and it isn't too loud. I repacked mine and quieted it down somewhat. When new pipe time rolls around I'll get the Paul Turner or LRD.

Good choice with the lrd, I love mine, I have bought 2 of them, they are the most powerful best sounding and best looking pipe availible, I've had many. BUT LRD is not good for the ppl that need a quiet pipe, even after repacking they scream!

Hey FAST453EX.
Question for ya! (or anyone else that cares to chime in)
I see from your signature that your '87 is pretty well crank't.
What have you found to remedy the infamous head gasket failures on the '87 cylinder??
Especially running that kind of compression, the stock configuration would probably blow head gaskets like there's no tomorrow. (Like mine does)
I've been running an FMF gold series pipe with an Answer silencer for years... The 'ol girl is pretty quiet provided I keep the silencer packed every other year or so..
Those LRD pipes sure are sexy looking... If they make that much more power, mebbe I'll have to order one
