LT-80 Air Box Mod and other ?

I am going to have my son's LT-80 ported and polished this fall (probably by LT80). In the mean time I would like to do other stuff to it. Can someone describe to me what the air box mod is and how to do it? What does the clutch spring cost from CT racing? Removing 3 of the clutch weights at the same time as the spring should work OK I would assume. And last question how many sizes up on the jetting should I go with the air box mod.

Kevin, I just wanted to let you know that you can't go wrong with having LT-80 port your cylinder. My friends son has an LT-80 that Jack built and it flat out rips. We have been dealing exclusively with Jack on the 80's for the past few years and he knows what he is doing. Your best bet is too talk to him about simple mods to run until that cylinder is ported. Taking 2 rollers out of the front clutch will allow the motor to rev up quite a bit higher before taking off and should help acceleration.T%aking 3 out may be too much of a change. You may have to change the overall gearing of the machine to compensate this change. We have messed with the clutches so many times I can take one apart blindfolded. Feel free to e-mail me and I can start you in the right direction at least. As far as the airbox is concerned I am not sure what mods you are talking about. The LT-80 he has is AMA SuperStock 90 Class legal and has the stock airbox with a good foam filter (Uni). We have raced it against many LT-80's built by such builders as CT and LRD complete with there pipes and carbs and he beats them all with a stock carb and stock pipe.The definite secret in getting these machines to fly is the clutching as well as porting. I just completed some cheap mods to my sons lt80. I opened the air box 4x the size if you remove the top piece of the air box you will notice that the opening is small this mod is easy to do,it also gives the lt80 a more powerful sound. Next i made the reed cage alittle bigger and polished, installed boyesson reeds,took 2 roller weights out of the front clutch. I don't know which mod made the biggest diff but the quad rips. I got all the info from the nice people that visit this site Thanks!! If your looking for some easy low cost mods give it a try. And then move on to other mods(porting etc).

When you start taking 2 or 3 rollers out of the front variator, you are asking for trouble. The correct way to reduce the roller weight is to replace the 6 rollers with 6 lighter weight rollers. For example, your stock rollers could weight as much as 9 or more grams each. With 6 rollers, that is about 54grams of force on the variator. That much weight causes the belt to move into high gear before the engine is ready resulting in low acceleration performance.

With your 3 roller plan, you have about 27 grams of roller weight. That is usually not enough weight for most LT80's. You will notice that with 276 grams the engine revs up dut it does not accelerate. The real problem with using 3 rollers is the extreme load you place on the three rollers. WHen you use 2 rollers, you further increase that load and you make the rotating mass run out of balance.

I have special heavy duty rollers in any weight combo. I usually install 6 - 6 gram rollers (36 grams) in a slightly modified LT80. With the rollers I use, there is no need for the grease, backing plate, seals or mess-- the rollers are self-lubricating.

Hey everybody, I'm new to this site and so far its been great.
I'm doing some mods to my sons lt80 also. How hard is it to remove two of the roller weights? Spent most of my money on tires, axle, pipe and other stuff just trying to do some, not so costly, mods that I can do myself. This is the first Lt80 he(we) have had. I,ve got a service manual, but if anybody could help me some on the weights and other simple mods I would greatly appreciate it.

I'am running 4 rollers in the front clutch now and found that it increased acceleration performance. It does rev up alittle more. I'll try it and see what happens 18 grams would make that much diff? Another question the kasea front shocks do bolt up on the lt80 however the back does not. What are the price on the front kasea shocks and would they be ok for racing(8yr old) Works makes shocks for the lt80 $259 for the fronts $180 for the back.
