Z400 Vs. LT250r

I would "guess" that they should be fairly close, stock to stock. The QR will likely take it on top end due to gearing possiblities with the six speed. The z400 motor, however they bring it out in the final mode, will have the potential for an easy 50hp. I say easy as in rebore&rechrome cylinder to 440 (about $450), high comp piston, cams, pro flow, a GOOD pipe, and maybe porting. We'll have to see if the clutch will hold up to this, but it should. If you do the teardown/reassembly/jetting yourself about $1250,$1600 if get it ported and have the head done up properly.
If you just want to drag race, buy a Raptor, the same mods will net you closer to 60-65hp. The Raptor will likely need a Hinson basket and gear cutting for durability. You'll likely need a longer swingarm(and a wheelie bar)

dude, from what my local engine builder/mechanic/amateur MX guru tells me, to rebore a nic-a-sil cylinder you need to put a brand new Iron sleeve in. Why go through the trouble of rechroming the cylinder, anyways? You won't get any more power, it'll just be a little tougher. Your heat dissipation will remain the same... It'll just cost a sh*tload.
I wouldn't be worried about rechroming it. If I was then everybody would be chroming their 400EXs and Raptors when they bored them... No difference.

Plated Cylinders do not have a sleeve. The plating is to protect the soft aluminum cylinder from wear. This is what makes them last. When you rebore a coated cylinder, you have to replate it or it would just be bare aluminum alla any kawasaki dirt bike cylinder with a year or two on it(their plating sucks). Eric Gorr's Forward Motion (very very reputable shop check it on the net for these types of mods and very good porting at very good prices) will do a YZ426 to a 444 with a wiseco for about $350, so it's not that bad. The benefit of the plating on aluminum is that it transfers the heat much better than thru a steel sleeve to an aluminum jug, so the motor will be a great deal more reliable than with a steel sleeve. The rebores are more expensive and take more turn around time, but for performance it is a superior set up and you just need to replace the rings and possibly the piston when you do a top end job. This is applying the best current two stroke tecnology(not to be confused with what us ATV guys get) with the four stroke motor. The key to reliability is running high comp/high rpm without excessive piston and valve roaching heat. This is why they do it, and this is why it is worth the bother. The new four stroke motors that make alot of power for the displacement are all done this way. 350X guys will tell you what the limiting factor is with that motor, don't get me wrong, it's a good motor. I know it's air cooled but it's the only example I can think of right now because there have been no other high performance 4s motors put in a trike or quad(dont even include the warrior, the only way to get power is to make it bigger ie big bore stroker). If you want to make a small (400-450cc) 4s make power you have to make it rev and have relatively high compression and this creates a lot of heat(power) and a steel sleeve will not last as long or work as well as a plated cylinder will under these conditions.
