I just got back from riding my new vinson in some water. The water was never deeper than the front fenders; however, once I got out of the water and put the vehicle in High it had some problems.

It would rev pretty high and wouldn't move. I'm assuming the belt was slipping. After a minute or so it would be ok. It didn't seem to feel any different in Low gear. I don't know much about these machines, Do they have separate belts for high and low? Any ideas as to what the problem in High could be?

Let me add, I'm experiencing the stiff shifter which isn't too bad. But sometimes I can't get the vinson in High. I think it's in the gear and I begin to accelerate and then it makes a grinding noise and pops into high!

Any ideas what is wrong?

could you smell the belt burning. Thats a sure sign it was slipping. You need the shift kit installed on your bike to solve your shifting problems. Our vinson wouldn't always shift from low to high either and would grind before it would engage. The internal shifting components are too sloppy and the shift kit fixes that. If your belt got wet and you didn't go very deep your clutch cover seal might be leaking.

Thanks pcbanshee!

I didn't smell any burning at all. The faster I drove it the quicker the problem went away. I would just have to let up on the throttle and then back down and the problem would dissipate. I did hear something in the trany make a loud cranky noise, but only when it was in high. It was almost like the thing wasn't in gear all the way.

Does that sound like the shifter problem or not?

It will make a loud clank if you take off hard and the machine is not properly in gear. If either falls out or completely goes in gear. Make sure it is properly in gear before cranking the throttle hard.

pcbanshee:

thanks for the info. I've learned that if I take it out of L and place it in N first and then to H, it works fine.

My main concern is with the hesitation I'm getting coming out of the water. I don't smell anything burning and I've removed the drain plug and never found any water in the belt system.

Have you every heard of this problem before? If it is the belt slipping, is it hurting anything?

Thanks again,

Maybe try draining your carb because you got some water in there. Check your airbox as well to make sure it is dry. Putting some dielectric grease on the inside of your sparkpluk cap won't hurt either.
