The valves on my 02 eiger 4x4 manuel have ticking sound after it is warmed up. The noise is only occurs when going up a hill or accelerating real hard. It doesn't seem to effect my power or be a major problem. Could the motor be out of time? If so, how do you fix it?

Sounds like it could be spark knock. Are you burning a high octane fuel?

Mine ticks all the time when warm. I took it in at 10 hours, the dealer said they were fine. But you all know what kind of problems I have with this sorry dealer. I wish I could find a repair manual. Jerry

I have been using 89 octane gasoline. What is spark knock? What I'm hearing sounds like preignition.

Just for grins pull your plug and see if there is a lot of carbon built up on it. Sounds like pre-ignition. Same as spark knock. Not good! I'm having a little trouble believing that the Eiger would need high octane fuel. 9:1 compression ratio should be able to run on 87 octane fine. I suppose it could be too far advanced but I wouldn't have a clue how to change it. It appears to be CDI ignition and I would think that there probably is a way to adjust it.
One other thing to look for. Check the plug number. It should have a CR7E. Mine came with a CR8E. Don't know which one is hotter. Too cold of a plug maybe? This would allow too much carbon build up resulting in pre-ignition.
Could be the valves but I doubt it. Have you done the 100 mile valve clearance check?

In the manual there are 3 plugs recommended. 7,8,9. I beleive the 7 is the hottest, but better check to be sure. First get a new plug or clean the old one real good. Take it out and run it hard for about 5 to 10 min. Shut it down right away... Do not let it idle. This will give you a plug reading at top end. Your leanest point. Plug should be light brown to white. If it's dark, you need a hotter plug or a smaller jet. Do not check the plug at idle or low rpms, because if it is clean there it will be real lean on top.
