Sprocket
#2
I agree, I wanted to do the same thing and I have been researching it. I was hoping the motorcyle dr400 would work but that sprocket has different measurements and Chaparall said it wouldn't. I was able to get in touch with Sprocket Specialists and they said they could make me one but they needed the measurements. I don't have enough confidence in my measurement abilities to give them an accurate measurement but if you do great. They said it wouldn't be a big deal, I even thought about sending in my front sprocket so they could do the measurements on their own. However I don't want to be without the bike for a while.
Let me know if you find anything out.

What effect does it have on the quad when you drop 1 tooth on the front? how about the back? I would think it would make it faster? I know that 5th gear seems to rev out and the bike feels like she has more speed in her. Also 2nd gear is to low for me, I always use 2nd gear for climbing hills and it seems like its a tad to slow and low for what I do. Thanks.

Changing the front 1 tooth is about like changing the back 4 teeth. Our riding areas around here require the bikes to be geared a little lower than stock. Everybody I ride with has had to regear for the Chadwick area regardless of the type of quad. Most of our hills are extremely steep and have ledgerock that you have to get over to traverse the hill. A lot of the trails are like trial riding. I rode both days this weekend and never got out of 2nd unless I hit a gravel road. It's actually a lot of fun but you have to be able really handle soome technical stuff. I would gladly show someone the Chadwick area and there are several websites out there on it.

Ok, I want to gear up some because 2nd is to short and 3rd is to long for my hills. So if I add a tooth to the front do you think it will be geared to high? How much top speed do you loose by removing a tooth from the front?

I think you lose around 3 to 4 mph per tooth but you do gain a little in acceleration. I mainly just need a gear change so I can run 2nd and 3rd on the trails and drop my cruise rpm. My EX was the same way. I don't really have any areas where I need the top end of the Z anyway. I do agree that the quad feels like it would run a faster topend with higher gearing. It has the horsepower. I will eventually go to a 22 inch tall rear tire for ground clearance and I will have to drop another tooth for that change. The extra height is needed for the rocks around here. And I think the pipe, airbox, jetting, and gear change will offset the power difference of the bigger tires.

bbertram, sounds to me you need to just gear down a notch and pull your hill in 3rd, it will pull real hard off the bottom, but you will loose on top speed.
If you gear up without any hp gain, that Z will be a dog off the bottom. All the guyes I talk to that have taller than factory gearing have made a significant HP increase on their quads so it will still have a good throtle responce.
Gears are cheap, when the after market gears come out, try it, I expect you will be very unhappy with a taller gear.(w\out more hp)
Where I ride(TN), the average rider wouldn't make it through our trails with a taller gear(not knocking anyone's rideing ability). The trails are rough(mostly), the hills are short and steep, and instant throtle responce is a must!
Just depends on where you ride, diff terain requires diff set-ups.
Anyway, keep us posted on when and where these sprockest are avaliable!!!
