Z400 break in procedures
#1
Anybody broke there Z in yet? Mine is at 7 hours, at 10 do we get the valves adjusted, or is it at 20? Or even necessary? Or just an oil change? This is my first 4 stroke and the break in is much different than any of my 2 strokes. The owners manual is a little vague on the "adjustments" thats needed at 10 hours, or Im just a rock. How about all of these clones of the Z? Regardless, I absolutely love this machine. Pulling duty this week, no riding! Thanks for the help.

I was thinking that the first oil change if I am reading it correctly is at 25 Hours. I have been riding mine now pretty hard. I only put about 2 hours on it before I opened it up. I am from the school of break it in the way you are going to ride it. Motor is decent, but you can feel it opening up more. Don't be paranoid these motor are very strong and maintanance is important, but not brutal.

Good topic, I am going to change my oil after the first 5 hours for the first time, should i also change the filter, or wait until 25 hrs??? 50hrs??
The manual seems to go by time in months not hours???
Thanx,

I talked with a couple of different dealerships, the general thought on the matter was to change the oil after 10-15 hrs (filter too as there are tons of little metal shavings in there), and have it in for the first service, where they check all the little nuts and bolts, giving it a once over while they grease everything and check the valve clearances but more importantly, if you don't, you'd be lucky if you would be able to have warrantee work done on it for free because you never had the first check up done. Me? I'm spending the $160. as is my girl which is better than $250 at another shop I called.

Well, first I called Aurora Suzuki cause that's where I bought it. They wanted like $250 bucks, and I'z wuz like, uh, yeah, ok. I must remember though, the service shops are a separate entity of the dealership, so my in's with the owner of the bike shop didn't do me much good. He just put me on the phone with the tech. I then called Everett Powersports. They sell Zuki's there too, and they're the ones with that price. They check all the nuts and bolts, grease up your stuff, and check the valves. However, he is booked up pretty solid, so you'd better call soon cause he's booking now for like two to three weeks from now or so. I'm scheduled to be in there on July 6th personally since it's the weekend, and I drop it off in the morning, and pick it up that day. Real nice. Well, I'm off to play with my bike. Later.
