Let's list the differences between the two setups.

I know the compression ratio is 12.2:1 on the bike and 11.3:1 on the quad.
Cams?
Does the DZ use a 40mm carb?
Silencer?

What else is there?

there are actually two different drz's the drz400 and the drs400s the drz400s is the street and trail it puts 33 horsepower out and the drz400 puts out 39 it is in silencer and cams i believe the z 400 uses the drz400s motor and puts out 33 but with the yp pipe and silence some cams and u will be pushin 40 or better

I think the DRZ400 puts out 51. We need to get to 51. Without speculation, what's the diff?

Here is what I have found out so far.

According to dealer spec sheets, the SAE power on the DRZ400E is 41, the S is 38.

Compression: E is 12.2:1, thanks to a .025" thick base gasket.; the S is 11.3, with a .075" base gasket.

Carb: E uses a 39mm FCR; the S has a 36mm BSR (?)

Cams: I haven't been able to find out if there are differences -- my guess is none.

Silencer: Don't know, but doubt there is a difference.

Since the LTZ has three fewer ponies than the 400S, but the same compression and carb, it looks like the cams, or silencer, or both are "milder." Also, the crankshaft in the quad is supposed to be a little heavier, and that may have some effect on the final peak horsepower figure. I measured the base gasket thickness, where it protrudes at the front of the cylinder, and got about .033". So, apparently, the lower compression is the result of cylinder height, the piston or, possibly, head gasket thickness.

Well it's not that much of a gap then. I thought the most powerful DRZ400 put out 51 HP.
A carb makes sence to do and that would bring it right up there.

Thanks guys.

What is the difference between the 2 carbs, besides the size (mm)???

I mean a BSR compared to the FCR??

Is it worth a change????

Thanx,

The difference between the two carbs the FCR will flow more air and has a quicker throttle response.

I just called HMF back and they said $229. If a dealer it selling it for less they got the wrong price and are going to lose money. They insisted it is $229 for the LTZ400 pipe and not $189.

I think I heard a while back that the 51 HP was from that 450 Yoshi kit.
I'm going to let all the smoke clear before I start hopping her up.
I'll let you guys try different part combos, and use the info to get the right parts the first time.
