Just checked the Yoshamaria site and the 450 kit makes 46.4 HP, and stock is 33 HP.

The owner of Southland Suzuki races DRZ's and told me that the LTZ has a lower compression piston and a junk carb. They had to do this to pass emissions so that we could have a green sticker. Change your piston, carb and exhaust and you will see a big difference in performance.

I think he got the 39 horse number from a post I made a while back. I got that number out of the May 2001 Dirtbike magazine. Looking at the magazine again, the exact number is 38.4 and I believe that number is at the rear wheel.

I just sold my DRZ400E recently and I will say that the correct stock # is 38 for the E, the differences in that motor and the ltz would include......
Carb FCR vs. bsr
base gasket is thinner on E to get the higher compression
CDI box and rev limiter are a little different
cams and exhaust are different, for more low end torque
I had the bike 2 years and LOVED it, the DRZ engine is great, even in the S form, exhaust and jetting really open it up and let it run! After 2 years of research in the engine I think the most accurate HP #'s stock are E-38 and S-32. but they are very responsive to mods. I never had any problems with it either, it was super dependible!!!! Have fun with the LTZ's guys! Later

Okay, now we have a little more potentially useful info.

RaptorRider660R tells us the cams,CDI box and exhaust are different for the E-model DRZ vs. the S.

WP's info is that the LTZ piston is different from the piston in the bikes. (We' already established the "junk" carb on the LTZ is exactly the same one that comes on the DRZ400S).

The most useful facts for upgrading our quads are that the cams and CDI box are different. If the cams are significantly different, they may be a good way to go. The specs for all the machines' cams should be available if we dig hard enough. The CDI box is more difficult to quantify and I suspect isn't worth the effort. The exhaust, could be an interesting data point if we knew how much of the 3 hp difference it was responsible for, but difficulty of fitment and sheer expense almost certainly makes it a poor investment.

Regarding the piston difference, even if it's true (which I doubt), the bottom line is that our quads already have 11.3:1 compression. We can duplicate the 12.5 of the "E" model bike by using its base gasket, and milling the cylinder head and/or the cylinder.

If I remember right, the intake cam is the most different, I have heard people change that with good results. The base gasket alone would give you the 12.2-1 comp. Personaly, I would change the exhaust first and jet, it really helped me DRZ, then I would off that carb for the FCR, which I think i want to do to my raptor as well, I don't know why but they put the crappy carbs on the quads and good ones on the bikes, Yamaha and suzuki use the FCR, but gave us constant velocity cabs instead . The only bad part is the carb is not cheap, and worse for me i have 2. I think the carb swap alone is worth a good several HP. see ya guys.....
