I sold my '86 LT, bought a cr250....MISTAKE. So, I am selling the CR and going to buy another LT. Sure, they ain't perfect, but they are fun!
Anyway, I found an '87 locally. Stock all except for new holeshot tires and a DG silencer. Has approx. 2 hours on 1st over bore/top end job. Still has original bars (i couldnt beleive that!), original pipe, the original ignition key (i didnt even know they had them!), etc. Only problems is the stock plastic is kinda faded (of course) and the seat has a small (approx. 1 in.) tear. Guy wants $1600...good deal? or wait for a '90-'91-'92? I know 85-86 models aren't the ideal ones to have, are 87's much better?
thanks

Didn't like CR because it appears that I don't heal nearly as fast as I did when I was 16 years old. The wife kinda is on me to sell it after it landed on my left leg saturday morning (Typical over-the-bars-landing-on-the-front-wheel--lots of swelling, big bruise,etc..women don't understand that it don't really hurt hehe)..also I have more sand to ride on than real trails so that was a factor also. I bought the '87 LT250R for $1600. It's about the best (defintely the most original) LT I've seen locally to date..would rather have a '90-'92 but I'll take whats availible..

Congratulations on your purchase! Sounds to me like you got a great deal. Actually I believe it was the '85 and '86 models that only have the 5-speed tranny. As far as I know the '87 and up has the 6-speed. Everything from '87-'90 is almost exactly the same. Then they redesigned the rear suspension for the final two years. Again, congratulations and happy riding.

not sure wich year it is but some years had 5 bolts on head and some have 6. I heard that the years with the 5 bolt head, blow head gaskets often

just a thought but it sounds like a good price to me !!

87's are definitly 6-speeds. The quad does good! It isn't as fast as the '86 I had, but then agian this one is almost stone-stock...
