Synthetic oil or ???

I use Mobil 1 MX4T 10W40, its a synthetic oil which I prefer to any conventional oil. Its expensive though, about 8.00 a qt.
Look at it this way, conventional oil is a bunch of very small "*****" but no two are the same size, so you get uneven protection of moving parts.
Synthetic on the other hand is man-made (as you know) so the "*****" are all exactly the same size providing even protection throught the engine, and besides it has a higher threshhold for temperatures meaning it wont want to breakdown as fast as a conventional oil.
Any synthetic is gonna be good, but I figure if Mobil 1 comes from the factory in cars such as Ferrari's, McClaren's, Corvette's, etc. then they know what theyre doing when it comes to oil.

Well I spent 2 hours reading last night, I always thought Mobile oils were top of the line, heres what web site after web site has to say.
AMSOIL #1, it's been proven aginst Mobile. You guys are now thinking oh well since AMS is #1 that means Mobile is #2. NO the order is #1 AMSOIL, #2 Castrol, #3 Valvoline, #4 Mobile. Each site pretty much had the same outcome.
As for Oil in my Quad, I run Castrol GTX 20w50 in the summer, and Castrol GTX 10w40 in the winter.

use belray synthetic. it's 15 bucks a litre, cdn(quart) and when i used it in my XR250 the oil stayed gold even after i changed it. it's so slick that it isn't recommended for break in use. they say some syn-oils cause clutch slippage, but i never noticed any with this bel-ray stuff.
use thicker oil in the summer, thinner in the winter.

one of my buddies was running a synthetic oil in his quad. he was riding along and his motor siezed up. he checked his oil and it was bone dry. he had a leek and he never knew it. the new syntetic oils are used in cars because cars can heat up to higher temperatures than motorcycles. when there is a problem, the exhaust will start to smoke when using petroleum oil. motorcylcles and atvs do not burn hot enough to burn the synthetic oils so the motorcyle will not smoke. the moral of the story is that if there is a problem, you will never know if you have synthetic oils because atvs and motorcycles dont burn hot enought to make the synthetic oils smoke. so that setles one aspect of this post
