quad racer moto swap
#1
I currently moto-cross a 1992 suzuki LT 250r. Tired of taking 3rd and 4th in the holeshots to honda 250r's. Have gearing set up correctly, but just seem to lack power. Current motor mods are bored .80 over, reed valves, FMF fatty pipe and silencer. Would like to swap a LT 500r motor in it's place. Looking for help and information on how difficult and what needs to be done. Other option it to do more engine mods to current 250 motor but unsure what to do. On this looking for parts dealers and shops where motor could be sent. Text

If these are the only mods you have done to your motor its no wonder you are not getting the holeshot. You have just begun up the power curve. Get the thing ported and a real carb installed, get a cool head with some more compression or get your head cut, match the pipe to the new combination then match the gearing to your new powerband. Your new LT250 will blow your current one away.

Thanks for the information. Don't really do most of my own work to my bike, have brought to the shop, really vage on what is really needed. First, what size carb and what kind. Now with putting cool heads on what is the best dome size to use. Lastly, need help on match pipe to new combination and then to the new powerband. As for pipe manufactur, I was looking to buy a LRD, but know nothing on different silencers.

Try to pick one engine builder and stay with their combination, you are looking for a total package and not just individual items.
Check out LRD's website
Check out FTZ's website
check out Trinity's website
you can call these people and talk to them about what you want and what they can do, they are very helpful in helping you decide what you want.
their are a couple of LRD and FTZ LT250R's that I flattrack with, they are very powerful.
My LT250 is built by a little company in wisconsin that goes by the name of "Scott's, the Highest Level"

I also have a '92 LT250R quadracer setup for MX, and have owned one prior to the current one I have now. I have always had great results with getting the jump off the line and getting holeshots. It seems that the Suzuki's have great low end power to pull off the line and out of the corners. I currently have my motor done by FTZ racing and it runs very well. With my older quad which was mainly stock other than a cool head, pipe , silencer, and reeds I would also get great starts, and that was against Honda 310's, 330's and banshee's. There's no question the others had more top end power, but the low end pull from my Suzuki seemed to be very useful. Not that it's my business, but maybe just try timing your starts and practicing more with that. I like to run 18" turf tamers on back and go up 1 tooth on the countershaft sprocket as far as gearing is concerned. Of course that was because the track I would mainly run didn't have high speed sections to need top end speed. If your quad is lacking power, make sure to see if the power valve is actuating and do a compression check to ensure your cylinder is in good shape.
Hope this helps you out some. One more thing. Ditch the stock Mikuni carb and go up to a larger Keihin for better results.....it'll really wake your Zook up!

Thanks for the info, I have the same gear and tire size set up with the exception of running holeshot mx tires. As for plans with motor, I called LRD today and getting ready to send motor out to have 300 kit installed. I have 5 more races left this year and then plan on doing the instulation. Hard part will be getting through the winter to try my new power, knowing myself I'll be out there jumping snow banks.

I thought about it, but do now know how to find if any local races. Any help? What kind of gearing would I need, either for 660 foot drags, or ovals.
