I am going to participate in some atv mud drags that are in a small town in Iowa called Reasnor. My uncle competes with his truck and when I watch them they advertise Quad drags and they said that the mud will be like 6 inches deep but it should be gooey and sticky until the ruts get formed. The track is like 90-100 ft. My question is, I have an 86 Q'sport 230 and you can see the mods I've done at the bottom. But I can't really shift because of the boots I am gonna wear and because it would hurt my run. I was gonna start in 2nd and finish in second but today when I was riding a mud/ water hole, second was down on power and bogged so I shifted back down to first. First isn't big enough and won't give me enough momentum to be fast. I have the stock gearing which is I think 40 in the rear and 12 in the front, I also have 22x11-9 Cheng Shin C-828's in the rear and I will put the stock 21x7's back on the front to keep the front low. What gearing change should I make in the rear? I don't want to have to buy a new chain though so it would have to be like a 1 tooth difference. Should I go taller and run in 1st gear or should I go lower and go for 2nd gear? Also could I get a different size front sprocket and not need to take any links away? If I can, then what can I do to it that would be better than the rear sprocket? If I went taller gearing would I not have as much power/ torque to do it in 1st? Thank you for any advice and I am sorry my topic is so long.

Well, I am just gonna wish you luck, cause if they is a Grizzly, Prairie 650 or any 4x4 for that matter, you're gonna have a tough race. Unless they will have two classes for two and four wheel drive. Wish they'd do that around here, I'd totally enter my Z. I wouldn't even care if I won, I just like the mud.

See this is how it will go. There will be Classes A, B, C, Powder Puff, Pee Wee,and intermediate (12-15 years old). Class A will be any and all 2-strokes and 400cc and above 4-strokes. B will be all 350cc and smaller 4-strokes (my class). And C will be any and all 4x4's so I will have a darn good chance if someone can help me with my gearing question because I have everything else figured out but I need the gearing to be right so I can do good. Please someone help me with my gearing question. Ohyeah, 3-wheelers are encouraged and will be put in their respective classes.
