Bottem end
#5
I raced the local stock shee on a gravel road and destroyed him until 4th gear. So the bottom end is pretty good.
I then raced the local shee on pavement and I beat him off the line until 3rd gear. I find the bottom end to be really good. The top end on the shee will smoke my Z though, hehe. I'll have a little surprise for him next time we race. My 15 tooth should give me some more top end. Then I'll race him again next spring with my new exhaust and I'll eat him up, haha.

If the Z has a weak point, it is on the bottom end of the powerband. Lots of folks in here disagre with me (but lots of those same folks are going one tooth down on the front sprocket, so that really says something!!). Hopefully, the aftermarket will take care of this. It has way more bottom than a Shee though, and has a bit of hit in the midrange.

I own both and the banshee has no bottom end, my Z has as good or better bottom end than my 400ex's. I am happy with the bottem end on my Z with my mods. Banshee's have never had a bottom end.

Suzuki took the lowend CV carb from the street legal version of the DRZ(DRZE I believe) and used it for the Z400. They did, this I assume because of $$. Rather than blather about things I only partly understand I will post some quotes from Dana Delinger of ATV Addiction:
"The bottom end mush you mentioned is compliments of
the Mikuni BSR CV carb Suzuki chose to put on the
quad. Get it swapped out and your bottom end will be
alot more fun."
AND
"Hi George, one simple thing that we've done so far to get a nice
boost in low end power on the LTZ400 is slip a stock 400EX carb in
the place of the Mikuni BSR that comes on it from the factory. On
the dyno, we saw near a 3hp gain in low and mid range and almost an
additional 1hp at peak. On the seat, it gave the quad a much
crisper/repsonsive feel and made the first 3 gears so much more fun."
This doesn't say exactly but, it gives you an idea that the stock carb is holding the motor back from it's potential.
I've seen many EX carbs for $75 so, it would be a good investment for HP gain especially if you combine it with a pipe and airbox/filter mods.
