yes, depending on how much you change the tire size, it can affect the gearing.
i think that when you go down in tire size, the front sprocket gets a tooth or two.
the best tire depends on your riding. itp holeshots are great for most of your trail riding, but the maxxis razors are about the same and they are cheaper and last somewhat longer.
for sand, skat-track extremes, if you can afford them. definately a 10in wheel with a 20 or 22 in tire. otherwise, the haulers are great too. if you want to be able to turn in the sand, and you arent focused solely on drag performance, some sand devil or similar v-shaped paddles are good to go with.
