Suzuki LT230 carb adj, won't idle??
#1
I have aquired an older model Suzuki 4wheeler, its a 87 LT230s with electric start, reverse and chain drive. I can't seem to get the carb adjusted so it will idle good. It either idles really fast or goes dead. Can anybody tell me what or how to adjust this carb? Thanks

Take the carb apart and clean it out. It may have trash in it holding open the needle and seat. My '86 was doing the same thing and it worked for me. Carb kits are about $12 or so if you rip a gasket taking it apart. The idle screw is on the left side near the choke lever. Try the carb cleanout first.

Are you talking about the main needle that is in the center of the carb and moves up and down with the throttle cable, or the one in the bottom which shuts off the fuel when the float bowl fills up?? Its not flooding or missing, it just won't idle. When you look into the aircleaner end of your carb with the throttle shut all the way is the throttle sleeve suppost to be all the way to the bottom of the bore touching the bottom? Or is it suppose to have a little opening to it? Mine doesn't go all the way down to the bottom. I think that has something to do with my problem but I don't have a manual or another carb to look at or go by so I'm STUCK!!!I have cleaned the carb. I'm afraid it may have some tiny hole or something that I may have missed blowing out with the carb cleaner. I really wish somebody could explain to me which needle does what and which hole goes where. Thanks

My problem was gas leaking which was also causing the no idle problem I had. After stopping the leak I just turned up the idle very slightly and it idles fine now. It had sat for a couple months while I replaced the piston and reworked the head to fix a smoking problem. The piston is a little higher compression and the motor is sealing much better. That plus the downtime may have created the need for idle adjustment. The idle screw needed very slight movement to make a big difference. I think the throttle sleeve is supposed to cover completely and the idle circuit handles idle only. Possible throttle cable problem? If your throttle is cracked open, idle circuit will be useless. The owners manual has a section about the black choke limiter **** position on the right side of the carb, if it's not in the right position it could cause your condition too. The manual says- Below 40 degrees, choke limiter **** out, choke up**Above 40, choke limiter **** in,choke up.These carbs are fairly simple so your problem is most likely a basic one that you will find if you check all the basics. Good Luck!
