Sand Paddles on LT500
#1
I have a '90 LT500 pretty much stock engine. I don't want to run haulers 'cause they are only good for going straight and I like to do burm shots and other than drag racing/hill climbing. What paddles do people recommend/use? I have been looking at the Sand Skate 1 & 2 - 8 paddle 1-1/4" paddles (not 7/8") I know with the haulers you go with the 10 paddle but I am afraid if I get the 10 paddle in the sand skate it will still push me forward and take away some of the turning ability. I still want to be able to launch up the hills and be able to do radical soft sand hill climbs. Am I asking for too much in one tire setup? BTW, I am running the sand sharks currently and they are just not enough tire for the 500.

I have heard that the paddle brat tires are a great paddle for dune riding...but i believe they are a little pricey. I also run the sand shark tire and they are alright tires but it doesn't give you very good straight line performance. I believe that the new extreme haulers are also great tires and with the power that a 500 makes this would be a great tire and as far as turning i think you will be able to adjust to them and learn how to turn easier. Zillarider02 has paddle brats and he might be able to tell you some more about them...good luck

I run 21x12x8 Padla Brats on 10" wide rims. These tires are made by Sand Tires Unlimited and come with 18 paddles. Paddle height is fairly short and most people recommend that the tires be grooved. I have about 1/4 of every paddle cut in a stagger pattern like a buggy tire. The Brat's work really well for drag racing, hoolshooting, or just playing. Not a large rooster, but plenty of hook. We have two other 500's running Sand Skate II's which are a good tire for a mild motored Zilla. They work really well as a play tire or hill shooter, but like most V-Paddle's they aren't great for dragging. The third 500 run's 10 paddle haulers which are another good choice. Personally I don't care for the glued on paddle design. Any of the above tire can be bought for around $80 a piece. Good luck.

i say go with the sand skate II's and just run about 2lbs of air. this will give you the traction you want but still allow you to turn easily. This is the setup my uncle runs with his zilla frame and a ninja 600cc motor. if your running sharks right now, you might try lowering the tire pressure in them as well. stay away from the glued on type paddles , they tend to rip off on the bigger bikes.
good luck

I run padla brats also. Great tire. I have the same setup as zillarider02 with every other paddle haven a third taken off. Just make sure you run the taller paddles to the outside. I think I saw a pair on ebay, might be worth a shot.
