Default Good deal on a Quadzilla?

Howdy everyone. I am looking for a lt500 but out here in Washington they are hard to find. I have found one though and wanted an opinion on it. It is an 88 with new rear plastic and seat cover. The front fenders have been shaved. One thing that I dont know about is that the owner says that it has an 87 cylinder on it. I have heard about the head gasket problems with those and know how to fix that. I also heard that the 87 cylinders had a larger intake, is this true? Other than that it is mostly stock. I think I can get it for $3000. Opinions? Thanks.

I missed a good deal by a day and dont want to make that mistake again, lol. (dual-sporter you know what I am talking about)

$3K is average... not a real smokin' deal... but not bad either.

Depends on the overall condition of the machine. If it's got an '87 cylinder...i'd be asking alot of questions as to why??? and what else has been done to the motor??? etc.???

('87 cylinder has 6 studs vs 7 on the 88+ machines)

There are many shortfalls with the motor in stock form... beware of folks wrenching that have no idea what they are doing...

Good luck!

Sounds like an OK deal, but as you have figured out, there are better out there. I sold my first '87 LT500 for $3000. It had a FMF pipe/sil, Trinity porting, new plastics and seat cover, shock covers, sand tires, etc. Call all the quad shops around your area, because you'll often find a better deal on a used LT500. I just bought a '90 for $2500 with a ton of motor work. I just got the frame and lots of other parts powdercoated and so my total is up to around $2800. There are problems with the bike (leaking case seals, shot silencer, need new a-arm/swingarm bearings) but since I do the work myself I just factor in the cost of new parts instead of the shop doing it, and I'll be polishing out the motor and swingarm myself too.

If I were you, ****** that one up. They are getting rare and hard to find everywhere, since idiots are chewing up the frames and putting in street bike motors. You can't go wrong with a LT500, unless you don't like starting them.
