Well i bought a new z400 yesterday, so far i put about 7 hours on it, easy breaking it in, only hit full throttle like 5 times for less than 3 seconds each.

This thing is amazing, i can't wait to really run the heck out of it, only 3 more hours to wait. The bike runs excellent, so far! It doesn't have a whole lot of power right off the hit, seems like revving up a tad, i know when i got on it the few times, it really seemed to like it. The stock grips SUCK! They are incredibily hard, i have 2 blisters on my hands. I had to go buy a set of Ourys at the Polaris shop...they are MUCH MUCH better.

Thats really it for now, i will have a full review after i break it in....now for questions

after the break in what should i do? Just assume after 10 hours its broken in and run it? Or should i do an oil change, and filter change? adjust the valves? ect? the dealer wants 60 bucks to do this. I'm not familair with this motor, but with some direction i'm not afraid to tackle anything :-D ! Sounds like famous last words to me..but hey! I checked the air filter its perfectly clear! I checked the oil as well today and its clean too, looks like it just came out of the bottle.

I hate to waste the money on changing the oil and filter if i don't have to.... The schedule in the book says after 1 month change the oil, but maybe they are figuring it would take the average rider a month to get 10 hours on the bike, heck i did 6 hours today.

Let me know your thoughts about this.and what oils do you recommend for hot weather that is coming my way...80-100 in Ohio.

I changed the oil and filter after breakin, the cost out weighs any breakin junk that may have been in the system.
Get a service manual for all the adjustments and how to do them, it's worth the money.
Had my Z for almost a year and love it still stock and no problems!

You should change the oil and oil filter maybe the spark plug to. to do so the drain is under the engine not hard to see drain that after running it for a second but not to long becouse it will get hot. after you drain it from the bottome put your oil pan some were by the oil filter (which is located on the right side of quad under the water pump there is three or four bolts take those out there will be oil that will come out then chang the filter put the cover on fill it up with oil and ride around for a wile and check the oil.

To change the spark plug there you take off the front plastics(witch is easy with those snap things) take off the gas tank i think theres only a couple bolts. then use the long socket in your tool kit that came with the quad. the spark plug is way down in the silinder and this socket has a ruber thing in it to get it out. remove and place new one in and your set to go.

dont gust do out and open it up take your time open it up for 10 seconds then let off then more and more. have fun later

You need to drain the reservoir also!! Your manual that is under the seat will show you everything you need to know to change your oil.

Also, to change the plug you don't need to remove anything!! Reach in, pop the boot off, use the removal tool in your handy-dandy Suzuki tool kit ( also under the seat ) and un-screw it. Be careful when installing the new one not to hit the tip of the plug on the head when putting it in and don't over tighten it.

Your valves are'nt "adjustable" in the old since, The valve clearence is set from the factory by using shims, Basically all you will be doing or your dealer will be doing is checking the lash and depending if it is off adding or removing shims, I checked mine and a few others I have talked with have yet to find a bike with the need for an a adjustment. The manual is a good idea, It will fill you in on the details
