Default Spindle Gear Shift

Hello everyone, new to the forum. I have a 2002 trx400ex. I have question regarding the Spindle Gear Shift that comes out of case. I broke this piece in half at the groove in the middle of spline that holds that gear shift to shaft. Now I have read that some people will drill and tap into remaining shaft and weld in place. To me this seems like more temporary fix than solution to the problem. My question is that if I were to replace this myself how complicated would this task be? I have experience tearing down 2 strokes as I have many jet skis, I have never messed with 4 stroke and was wondering if this project is worth doing myself to save some $$$. With limited experience, is this project too big to handle, do I need to completely tear down engine in order to replace this piece. Do I need any special tools to tear down and reassemble? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for an advice, newbie!! mprop

i just had the same thing happen to me... i can do the work myself. but if u dont have to much experience then i would probly have some one do it for u. u could try it urself but if u do i would definetly use a service manuel. yes u have to tear the whole engine down. special tools u will need would be: a clutch center holder and a flywheel puller.
