Default Running engine before oil change a must?

So I have heard some people saying that running the engine before, or while??, emptying the oil before changing is a good idea to get the old oil looser so it may exit the machine easier. What are some of your tips on this, this will be the first time changing the oil on an ATV for me...

Definately need to warm it up before changing, causes the oil to flow out better.

Also running the motor, and warming it up, makes the detergents in the oil, pick up the particles and crud, and suspend them, so they can come out with the oil. 10 minutes of driving is enough. usually idleing wont warm up the oil....the motor gets hot, but the oil wont unless theres a load.

Yeah, I noticed that after the fact. Oh well, I will know next time. I just changed the oil and the filter. It suggested 3500ml of oil, but only took 3.25 quarts until the window showed 3/4s full. Guess it was that cold oil sticking to the sides. I didn't expect all of it to come out, but more than that. Thanks for the info guys. I did idle it for about ten minutes before emptying. It is smoking a tad now but I guess it is probably just some oil that got on something. The old oil filter was, well i'll just say wow, and the same with the oil. This quad runs great (now) but I don't know how, doesn't seem like the previous owner maintenanced it to much. That stuff was dark, dark, black. Good God, LOL. Also, seems to idle just a little higher now, guess that could be from the previous lack of lubricant. But again, thanks guys.

Cool, I did notice it went down to about half way in the window. Thanks for the info, think tomm. I will add that other half quart before heading out.
