Default arctic cat 300 rebuild question

I have a 2002 Cat 300 which I just replaced the top end. Now the machine starts but is not consitent when starting (sometimes hard to start). Once going it will back fire in the cylinder, the header pipe is scortching red hot and machine still smokes a bit (not much though). I am guessing the timiing is ahead probably one tooth, anyone think the same or anything different. I wont ride it until I have a little more info. Thanks
