Yamaha 350 Warrior running rich?
#1
Hey guys, a buddy of mine bought a 97 warrior 350 and he got it for like 300$. Obviously because he got it so cheap there were some issues, the guy who he bought it from said it hadn't been run in about 6mo. We got a new battery, spark plug and starter coil I believe. Once we changed out all the parts we tried to start it and learned it wasn't geting any fuel so we took the carb off and checked to see if any fuel was getting into the carb at all and come to find out it wasn't, so we got the good ol' air hose and blew everything and finally cleared up everything and got the fuel into the carb. SO! It starts and idles but whenever you give it some gas it sounds like its about to bog out, the rpm's never go up but it does idle. I am by no means a mechanic or really have any idea what I'm doing, I'm just kinda self teaching in a sense on this project. From what I know I would say it's getting way too much fuel and/or the idle is too high (doesn't sound like it) and the RPM's won't go up. Also, when I pulled the spark plug after it has been idling for about 10-15mins it was burnt to a crisp! Which also leads me to believe it's running to rich but I have NO IDEA how to fix that, was hoping one of you knowledgeable mechanically inclined courteous people would help me out. Thanks in advance for all your help and sorry the explanation was long and painful to read ><, Oh! and when it's idling there is a huge CLANK, CLANK, CLANK every 1.5sec or so... NO IDEA what that is, spark plug is gapped correctly and has enough oil.

To me it sounds like a lean fuel condition not a rich one.
If you didnt dismantle carb to clean it, and just blew compressed air through it
you could have blown dirt through and up into the higher speed jets.
Engines on the lean side will stumble and bog when the throttle is applied.
A rich condition will also make the plug black .

I agree, a "burnt up plug" would be running lean, not rich,it would be black and wet if too rich. I dont know about the "clank" but the Warrior and Wolverine shared the same air/oil cooled motor, they do have a bit of valvetrain clicking at idle, but im not real sure about the clanking noise you are hearing, could be a rod wanting to escape the confines of the cylinder wall, or a sloppy crank bearing, but without hearing it for myself, I could not tell you. Take that carb off, use a straw on a can of carb cleaner and make sure you can blow liquid from all the passages and orifices, jets must be squeaky clean, especially the idle jet, and check the accelerator pump spring, factory is a limp little bugger, makes the plunger stick and causes a bad off idle bog, the spring out of a click type ink pen is the exact same size and is about 5 times stiffer, works like a charm. Let us know how its going, for 300 bucks, even if you have to go into the motor, you still got a pretty good deal.
