Default Repeated Fuel Pump failures

I am working on a 2004 Kawasaki Prarie 700 that sat for several years. I rebuilt the carbueretor, replaced the fuel lines, and then found a bad fuel pump. I replaced the pump and it started and seemed to run ok. A short while later, it stopped running and when I checked the new fuel pump, it was no longer pumping. I pulled the pump and tested it by directly connecting to the battery and got nothing so I ordered another. I put in the second pump and it was back running again. Unfortunately this pump now seems to be stopped. I was wondering about the voltage regulator and plan to test that next. What else could b causing these repeat fuel pump failures?
