Pull the black wire from the cdi and see if you notice any change in spark. If not pull the recoil housing and clean up the face of the pick up coil and flywheel. Maximum gap on the pick up coil to the flywheel magnetic tab is .040 You can lightly tap the coil mounting bracket inward and see if it helps. Plus check resistance on the white and white/red pick up coil wires. Should be around 97 ohms.

Default not firing on the 500ho Polaris

removal of the black wire made it run and I'm assuming that is the ground for the coil since I couldn't turn it off. do I have a part malfunctioning

The black cdi wire(kill wire)ties into the ignition switch kill wire and also the left control switch emergency on/off switch. Could be either one that's shorting out to ground causing problems. If they check out ok,then the internal kill circuit on the cdi itself could be at fault. I've found that to happen on several machines over the years. Even had one customer that didn't want to replace the cdi, decided he could just choke it down to kill it.. Gotta go with customers wishes even if they are stupid..
