05 Sportsman 400 clutch
#1
I have an 04 Sportsman 400, though I believe it is a 2004.5 so maybe different than some 04's. It is shifting quite hard and I have read many threads about this on Sportsman models but still unclear about some things. There is a surface at the bottom of the drive pulley that is about 1-1/4" in diameter, a wider space than the belt when idling (about 1250 RPM) and shiny and some threads have mentioned this being a bearing but it does not turn independently of the pulley halves and the parts blow up that i looked at did not show any bearing there. There seems to be plenty of slack in the belt when idling but the rear pulley is still turning. The belt was worn and I have ordered a new one but it would seem to me that a worn belt would create more slack and lessen the chance of engaging the rear pulley and would cause clutch slippage instead of making it engage at a low idle. Also, the owners manual mentions cleaning and lubricating the clutches but does not say what lube to use. Any advice would be appreciated. Larry
