Definately go with the Diesel. You'll get your money out of it either in resale value or just because you've kept the thing forever and saved so much more gas. And they can pull a hill without breaking a sweat.
I'm on the other end of things though. '91 GMC Sonoma long bed with a 4.3V6. I'm not a GM lover (this is a work truck) but that motor is really nice. I pack all my stuff in there and it will pull the hills really nice. Except for the steepest of stuff it will pull it w/o dropping out of OD.
I also have a friend who pulls a 28' toy box (always dry, never sets up the bathroom) with an F350 CC 4x4 V10 w/o breaking a sweat. 4 quads in the trailer. So definately go with the big trucks.
Also, be very careful of your weight ratings. It's not uncommon to go overweight on the rear axles for guys with F250s. Get the 350 SRW instead. And make sure you don't tow out of class. California a class C is only good for trailer with a RATING of up to 10,000lbs. That's RATING, not what the actual weight is.
Jeeps are also only good for like 2000lb max towing. Some models are only 1000lbs.

I agree with B&R Warrior about deisel economy. My Cummins 24 valve RV gets 12 MPG pulling a trailer that weighs about 4000 lbs. 1500 mile round trip to Oregon and 1500 mile round trip to Utah same mileage.

I think a car or jeep registration is around $36.00 a year. Trucks are at least $50.+ maybe closer to $60. (I tried to ask a friend about the truck reg. but couldn't get a hold of him.) My trailer is something like $6.00 a year. It would be nice to have a truck just in case I get another quad. (1 in truck, 1 on trailer) I guess I could always buy a larger trailer.

Racerbob, the "registration" you paid also includes your property tax. I don't know if you have to declare property taxes on vehicles in other states or not. But CA includes that in the bill (How nice of them, huh?). That's what the big VLF fight has been over. VLF is property tax. It's full value was at 2% on the purchase price with a depreciation schedule. The VLF offset went to 67.5% so it should be .65% now. Your actual registration is $31 or so. Plus with trucks you are probably also paying weight fees (based on unladen weight for the purposes of this topic), and other stuff (various fees that don't exceed $10 and depend on your county). Look at your bill. It will list everything in detail in the upper right corner. See DMV Brochure.

Hummmmmmm, Let's see..........Truck tags run me about $54 a year - That's double what it could be 'cause I run commercial tags. Extra fees? Extra fees? Extra fees? ......nope, that's it.
ATV trails that are measured by the hundreds of miles within 30 to 45 minutes of the house.
Enough snow in upper elevations in winter to play in it, more than enough mild spring and fall weather.
Tennessee is lookin' pretty good.
