i have a 03 xtended cab Z71 1500, 18000m, i just had the tires rotated and oil changed.(i do it every 3000 miles for both) my question is when i go straight no problem, when i correct the wheel a little or turn left or right i feel every little bump in the road through steering wheel, its almost as if someone is tapping on the steering wheel or there is play somewhere and this has only started after i had it serviced i looked at everything but i am no master mechanic. i really hate to take it to the dealer because they will test drive it and be like "we couldnt find anything wrong" ya know. Not to mention i just had the entire wire harness replaced because a mouse ate the wires and made a nest in the underhood fuse block and the insurance (uh progressive sucks!!!!) wont cover it. any info would be greatly appreciated cause all of u guys on this forum are the best![img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]

 

I would check to make sure the lug nuts are torqued to the proper specs. If you had a service station do the tire rotation they probably used an air impact wrench and put them on too tight. This can cause problems with the rotars and also make it near imposible to change a flat tire with the factory supplied lug nut wrench.

 

Its a good idea to re-balance your wheels whenever you rotate. If a wheel in the back is out of balance you many not feel it until you rotate it to the front. I had a similar problem last time I rotated without balancing. FYI - You don't need to rotate every 3K miles. I would say every other oil change at the most. I do mine about every 7,500-10,000 miles.

 

I know that the earlier 99-01 models had a steering issue that was recalled. My dad is driving an 02 gmc and has had none of the steering issues he did with his 00. That was gmc's side. I dont know about the chevy side, but it might be something to look into.

 

Probably the intermediate steering shaft. Mine went out twice within 60K miles. Same symptoms you mentioned. Actually a very common problem as I have learned from owners on other forums. It was a problem from the '99 Silverado body change on. Not sure if they ever fixed it right. Most of the time the dealer would just replace it and later on it would go out again. It has to do with a poor design but I guess GM figures it's cheaper to replace them until the warranty runs out. Then the owner pays for repairs every 30K miles.

They do need to be kept lubed but they will still wear and start clunking anyway. Lots of pissed off owners over this. If your's is under warranty, make sure the dealer checks this and replaces it. They usually just do the lube thing but once it starts making noise, it's too late.

 

you are right it was the intermediate steering shaft, the dealer knew exactly what it was. they only lubed it telling me that GM requires them to lube it once before replacement. The dealer also told me to make sure to bring it back again just before warranty expires so they can replace it, he also said not to tell anyone that he said it[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img] Also do you know how much that part would be to replace if i had to pay? and does this problem carry over to the Avalanche, because my father just bought an 04?

 

OH YEAH PROGRESSIVE SUCKS!!!!IF ANYONE HAS THEM CHANGE COMPANIES IMMEDIATLY
