had a customer in the shop on sat. owns, or did own, a chev. w/ duramax in it. think it was an 04. he plugged in the block heater for the first time last week. went in the house for 20 mins, came back out and found everything on fire. he lost the garage, truck, jetski, and a bunch of other stuff. had some pics of the mess. (sorry i dont have them). he almost lost the house. anyone else had or heard of this happening?

Ouch. Something fried. What did the fire investigator(s) have to say? You seem to be implying it was caused by the truck. I don't know what the load of the block heaters on the trucks are, but it could have been too much for the extension cord he was using. Most people don't get a cord that is rated for what they need. You need a 12 AWG cord up to 50' to support a 20A load. Longer then that, the cord has to be bigger (smaller AWG).
I'm not saying the block heater didn't short, but I'm going to be skepticle of it. 20:1 the circuit or wiring was overloaded.

blackandred, sorry don't really have much more info. wasn't really implying the truck was to blame. i know what you mean about the cords. see it all the time too. but from my understanding the truck did catch fire first.
