just bought a 28' work and play toy-hauler!!! love it. my truck is a 96 ram 2500 2wd with the 5.9 it tows well, but do any of you dodge boys know any tips and tricks . i am worried about the tranny. so far so good but has anyone tried an aftermarket torque converter and are they worth it? the trailer is 7420# empty. full of quads and camp gear, it will max-out the towing capacity of the truck at 9000#. i only plan on keeping it for 3-4 more years then getting a diesel.

I have an 04 2500 4x2 hemi and other than hitting the tow haul button I find the truck seems to handle a load a little better with a higher octane gas.... What this will do in the long run is beyond me... but I have 55,000 miles on the truck and she'll be gone in the fall of 08 so as long as she gets me there, I'll be happy

I just got rid of a 2001 Dodge 2500 4x4 Deisal with an auto tran because at 142k miles, it couldn't pull a 28 ft 9600lb trailer more than 40MPH on flat ground. I had all the fluid flushed before that pull. I upgraded to 2006 Dodge 5.9 cunmmins with a 6 speed stick and pulled that trailer coupled with a 23 ft flat loaded with a rhino and 5 quads at 80MPH up hill. I had to be pulling at least 13,500LBS if not more. My kids and friends passed me with fully loaded 40ft weekend warriors loaded the same way, only there rigs where chipped and putting out 450 HP or more.
Get a good truck and screw an auto. I don't even like the allison 6 speed. Ever wonder why 18 wheelers use standard trannys? Case closed.

Not trying to defend anyone, but if you cant tow at least 80mph up hill on lets say the kansas turnpike(my neck of the woods), then it is you (THE DRIVER whom ever it may be) that is the idiot and causing wrecks. There is nothing worse than coming up on a truck that is unable to pull his own load up a hill, With cars all ditching and diving around him or her to get by them...
(This is my opinion only and It may very well be wrong) Im not saying stupid driving is cool, just saying its good to have enough power for your load to keep up with flow of traffic.
And www.dodgetalk.com is also a great web site, im there daily. 05 ram hemi. so far its done me well. Youll find all kinds of power programs, intake mods, muffler upgrades, and even some gear swaps for the 2wd guys. alot of good info.

Because in an 18 wheeler the standard tranny is about $10,000 cheaper than an Allison. Don't believe me? Ask a trucking company. I have.

I just got rid of a 98 Ram 1500 4x4 5.9 Magnum. I loved that truck. Pulled my race car like it wasn't even back there. Problem was it was always breaking down. 70,000 miles....sucked intake gasket, 72,000 miles....tranny takes a crap, 74,000 miles....front axles break. This was not a vehicle that was abused. Chrysler needs to get it together or maybe they have since but I'll never know. I have owned my last Dodge.
