Had a 99 F-250 with a v-10 and I thought it was underpowered towing heavy. 11mpg empty and 6-7 towing. Go Diesel!!

I have a 2001 F250 4x4 V10 auto and love it. I pull a 12K lb boat and an 10K lb toyhauler and haven't had a single problem with the truck in 100K miles. It still gets the same gas mileage as new, 14 mpg on the highway, 11 mpg in town, and 6.5 mpg pulling a heavy load, and doesn't burn a drop of oil. I only tow with overdrive off and my tranny fluid stays nice and pink between flushes. I've driven this truck across the country a couple of times and even with 100K+ miles, I wouldn't hesitate to do it again tomorrow.
Early V10s have blown spark plugs out of the head. Ford changed the head and spark plug design in late 2001 but the real culprit was rust, the plugs would rust and weaken the aluminum head threads. Pulling the plugs and coating the threads with anti-seize is the best insurance. If a spark plug blows out of the head, the motor will still run and it's about $150 to have it fixed with a time-sert.
My Dad's 05 Dodge dually 6 speed Cummins gets 9 mpg towing my boat or toyhauler and 19 mpg empty. A few more mpg than my Ford but it doesn't really tow noticeably better, just a different rpm range.

If you are going to get a V10, get a diesel. We had one at our shop and I really didnt care for it as much as the Dodge (Cummins diesel) we had. We have a 3500 Chevy SWRD with an 8.1 and it hauls real good. We are getting rid of the F-350 that is a dually and has a Power Stroke. I did not drive it with a load, but over the road it rode pretty good.

Now you probably can get a few add ons that will help with the gas and hp, just like the diesels, but Banks and Bully Dog are really making a big stride to show that diesel is just as good if not better than gas all around.

If you are going to be doing alot of towing get the diesel, but here and there a big V-8 or V-10 may be what you want.

BIG THING ------- WARRANTY!!!! Who has the best and most to offer???????

My honest opinion is to stay away from the Ford V-10's. U-haul had such problems with the motors blowing and putting rods thru the blocks. These were not high milage trucks, these were all under 12k miles. Go diesel if you tow, and keep searching...

I had a 05 V10 excursion and I loved it. More then enough power for towing and I could get between 15-17 highway with cruz set at about 75. Of course if I was towing the milage would drop to about 12-13. Make sure the recall to the wiring harness is done(trucks included), as they now admit fault. Ford and I went to battle over this wiring recall and they told me tough as it did not include the excursion to begin with. Only trucks even though it was the same part numbers and issues. As they said they did not have a fire problem on the excursion but I recently seen ford has finally admitted guilt. So I spent $2100 to fix. After how ford MFG treated me I have now sworn off ford for life. Sure makes me want to go spend $62,000 for a new excursion, NOT. But I did like the V10

We have one at work and I have a chance to drive it maybee once or twice a week, the rest of the time my uncle is driving it. Anyways the motor is pretty strong the only problem is that our 350 is a crew cab with an 8 ft utility box on it so it really has no take off to it no matter how hard you hit the gas pedal. As for gas mileage that truck gets about 9-11 city (9 most of the time) and like 12-14 hwy (driving nothing over 65mph). I'd go with the diesel, their way more efficient if the truck is also your daily driver and they are better towers.

Have an 02 F350, like everything but the mileage-14mpg best, usually around 12. Good power, smooth, strong. Have not towed anything heavy, but have had about 4500# in bed once, hardly noticed it. Would get one again. Like as daily driver.

Thats one extreme to the next LOL. Going from a Pick up to a semi truck? I dont think you want to afford the insurance, and the fuel milage is going to be worse than the V-10 gas. about 6.0-9.2.
